Despite starting two companies in the United States, Solar City Chief Executive Lyndon Rive couldn't get his green card. It took his wife, Madeleine, getting hers through the 'exceptional ability' category, before he was ultimately able to get his through marriage.

He says, "If you are exceptionally good at something, the U.S. wants you. And my wife is one of the world's best underwater hockey players."

What's ironic is Lyndon introduced his wife to the sport. They were high school sweethearts living in South Africa. He started playing when he was 14. He started dating at age 16.

Lyndon played for South Africa at the World Championship in 1998, which was held in San Jose, Calif. In fact, in the same pool where we shot our story.

It was that experience that made him want to move permanently to the United States with his wife.  So, he sold his company there, and they moved to the United States.  They had to wait three years to play for the U.S. Team. Their first World Championship for the United States was in 2004 in Canada. He played for the men's team. She played for the women's team.

The next time Lyndon and Madeleine plan to play for the World Championships is in 2012.

The World Championships happen every two years.

"'It take a lot of work to prepare," he says. 'I probably spend 10-12 hours a week."

He spends a couple hours a day, several times a week practicing. It's mainly between 8 and 10 pm at night.

"Before SolarCity it was easier. I also have two young kids. But my wife and I do everything together. She's my best friend."

SolarCity, located in Silicon Valley, leases solar panels and provides other energy efficiency options to businesses and consumers.  Lyndon believes running the company and playing underwater hockey go hand-in-hand.

To be an entrepreneur and athlete, he says "you need to have drive, determination, and teamwork."

To which I respond, "And the ability to hold your breath right? In each role, you struggle to come up for air!"

"Yes," he laughs. "At least in underwater hockey we can take a two-second breath about every 30 seconds."
